The Company of the Margarines, Savonnerie and Cosmetics, MARSAVCO in initials, is an industrial and commercial company. It was part of Unilever group and was born from the merger of 'Margarinerie Rotterdam' in Holland and 'Brother' in London. It was at that time a public limited company form SARL. That company created in colonial times, in January 1922 under the name SAVCO, 'Savonnerie Congolaise' had as an aim for the manufacturing of soap from palm oil and palm kernel. Following the installation of new equipment for the manufacturing of margarine, it changes its name and became the Marsavco 'Margarinerie Savonnerie the Congo' in 1929.
Other dates have marked the history of the MARSAVCO:
• 1956 Marketing of refined oils. • 1961 installation of a modern machinery of manufacturing of the synthetic detergents, margarine, soap, and glycerin. • 1963 Installation of the machines for the manufacturing of the soap powders and a workshop of the toothpastes. • 1980-1986 Reorganization of the electric distribution; Acquisition of new machines of drying of the soaps; Construction of a new factory for packaging of oils and beauty products; Extension of the refinery.
• 1987-1993 Purchase of an electrically heated boiler able to use the electricity of the Inga dam; Association with the Plantations Oil mills of Congo. • 2002 RAWJI GROUP took over the Marsavco from Unilever. • 2007-2008 Installation of State-of-Art 300TPD Refinery. If the Marsavco has experienced favorable periods, it nevertheless had to deal with difficult periods, particularly during the first looting of 21 to 23 September 1991. However, the Marsavco, anxious to meet a real social need, including quickly restored and resuming normal business operations, after the second looting of 1992. In 1999, having to deal with an unfavorable economic situation, coupled with a unhealthy macroeconomic environment, where the operator did not find any more his account, The Unilever Group decided to stop all its production in 2000. The decision was officially published on 24 December 2000. The market was then marked by the absence of its products, entering however the list of essential goods. In February 2002, The RAWJI GROUP bought all the shares in the Marsavco and became the sole owner. To put the company on, the new owners will initiate an ambitious program of reorganization and investment for renewal, rehabilitation of production and expansion of the company, so better meet the needs of the Congolese people. |
